Mayor Michael Nutter |
Each year Philadelphia Hospitality presents the prestigious Vision for Philadelphia Award to an extraordinary individual whose bold leadership generates worldwide recognition for Philadelphia.
This year we pay tribute to Mayor Michael Nutter who has worked tirelessly for Philadelphia's future - for citizen health, crime reduction, public school education, ethics reform, the arts, and tourism and hospitality. Through his dedicated vision, he has rekindled our pride in the city.
As former chairman of the Convention Center Authority, Mr. Nutter spearheaded its $700 million expansion - a forceful reminder of his commitment to the tourism and hospitality industry.
By leading the movement for a smoke-free Philadelphia, Mr. Nutter has enhanced the health of our citizens as well as that of visitors to our city. His travels throughout the nation to find workable solutions for urban issues have won him the respect of the region. His belief in public school education is a commitment the community embraces. And his zeal for ethical government, contagious through its intensity, expresses the aspirations of us all.
We are honored to recognize Mayor Michael Nutter for his inspired Vision for Philadelphia.

Become a Friend of Philadelphia Hospitality at the Patron level and enjoy a behind-the-scenes experience and reception at a noted Philadelphia landmark. Each year we highlight a different location in Philadelphia, where our Patrons enjoy an out-of-the-ordinary experience similar to those we provide for our visitors.
The 2007 Patrons’ Event was held on January 14th at Barclay Prime, famed restaurateur Stephen Starr's "luxury boutique steakhouse“ located on the first floor of the historic Barclay Building on Rittenhouse Square. This special evening enabled us to thank our generous friends for their support over the past year and to extend a warm welcome to the friends of Philadelphia Hospitality's new Executive Director, William (Bill) E. Mifflin.
Guests sampled a delectable array of gourmet hors d'oeuvres accompanied by fine wine and champagne. Acclaimed Chef James LoCascio chatted with the gathering that surrounded him and received their enthusiastic compliments as he presided over the carving table of Kobe fillet mignon. All offerings were thoroughly enjoyed, and guests agreed that Barclay Prime’s celebrated Kobe sliders were indeed worthy of their fame.
Bill introduced his old friends to his new Philadelphia Hospitality family, thanked long-standing patrons for their support and, playfully, encouraged both groups to raise their hands and pledge assistance to our organization. He then introduced Starr Restaurants’ Chief Operating Officer Howard Wein, who spoke of the benefit to our city when innovative and eclectic dining choices abound. And when he offered guests his private number for his assistance in securing hard-to-get reservations, their delight could be gauged by the countless cell phones that came out.
The evening ended on the sweetest of notes as our guests enjoyed Barclay Prime’s delicious mini milk chocolate mousse cakes and banana cream cups and left with lovely gift bags designed by Starr Restaurants that included scrumptious truffles, a reminder of the elegance of the night.

Suzanne and Frank Binswanger, on their way to celebrate their own anniversary, pause outside the Library Company's 275th Anniversary Exhibition.

Philadelphia Hospitality jump-started its 25th anniversary year in October 2006 by joining forces with the Library Company of Philadelphia, the country's first lending library and the oldest cultural organization in the nation, which was marking its own anniversary .of 275 years. Friends of Philadelphia Hospitality examined a select set of treasures rich in images of the Philadelphia region that were pulled from the book-stacks especially for the evening. The Library Company's Executive Director, John Van Horne, greeted guests and shared informal anecdotes about the history of his institution. Judging from the audible buzz following Dr. Van Horne's comments, the evening was a hit.
The Library Company's Reading Room, usually reserved for research fellows and other serious students of early American culture, was the site of a Happy Anniversary sing-a-long, led by Philadelphia Hospitality volunteer, Paul Welde, who debuted his original rendition of the song. On hand to make this a memorable evening were good friends Pol Duffy, who presented not one anniversary cake but two, -in addition to mouth watering and exquisitely presented hors d'oeuvres - and Robertson's Flowers' Barney DeFusco, whose magnificent arrangement underscored the special occasion.
After the program guests enjoyed the 275th Anniversary Exhibition, Benjamin Franklin, Writer and Printer. Franklin founded this venerable institution, still vital and compelling after almost 300 years.
